“Civil War,” a new thriller directed by Alex Garland, follows a group of journalists as they make their way through a future vision of war-torn America. Manhola Dargis calls it “a blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction” and praises the “streamlined, insistently intimate story.” The film arrives in theaters today.

Originally a beloved book chronicling teen angst, “The Outsiders” now has a musical adaptation. Jesse Green writes that the production “has been made with so much love and sincerity it survives with most of its heart intact.” The musical is at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater in Manhattan.

Dystopian role-playing game “Broken Roads” takes place in a post-apocalyptic Australia, and the design team paid special attention to capturing the country’s atmosphere, driving the routes replicated in-game and recording ambient audio for the soundscape. The game is available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

Experience the 15th- and 16th-century version of the dramatic reveal at “Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance,” which features works that were “originally concealed in special cases and behind sliding or reversible panels,” and “gamify the experience of looking at portraiture” Karen Rosenberg writes. The show is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
